OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The Flying Shepherd Ranch is 501c3 nonprofit organization assisting Colorado dog and cat rescues, shelter volunteers and independent rescuers in saving dogs and cats facing euthanasia in out-of-state high kill shelters.
Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. The chances of leaving an animal shelter alive decreases dramatically if a dog or cat enters a facility in a region where pet overpopulation continues to be an ongoing problem. Many rural shelters and impounds in the southern parts of the US receive little to no foot traffic and the chance of a dog or cat leaving the shelter with an adopter is nearly non-existent.
For almost 4years, we have partnered with local rescues, such as Snow Capped Shepherd Rescue, Paws on the Ground CO, Retriever Rescue of Colorado, Mile High Lab Rescue, and many more, to pick up dogs, predominantly—on occasion a few cats—to fly them from Texas, New Mexico and Arkansas to Colorado rescues or adopters. In 2017 and 2018, we flew a total of 245 dogs to a happier future in Colorado, where shelters report a live release rate of 90+% and virtually no adoptable pets are euthanized.
Going beyond transport, the Flying Shepherd Ranch provides education regarding responsible pet ownership, advocacy and financial support to in-and-out-of state rescue organizations for veterinary care, temporary boarding, training and rehabilitation.
